Bridge 36 Replacement

Key to the continuation of rail service is dependable and strong bridge structures.  Bridge 36 was a side truss bridge relocated to the BB from another location on the C&O Railroad.  Following inspection, bridge 36 was found to have the lowest load rating and in the worst condition of any other bridge on the line. The BB embarked on its largest and most critical bridge project along the line with the upgrade of bridge 36.    Below is a photo essay of getting the old bridge span out and the new bridge span in:

Bridge 36 upgrade was a cooperative effort of the Buckingham Branch Railroad and the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT).  The BB was provided a “Rail Preservation Grant” from DRPT to assist in the financial expenses of this bridge upgrade.  BB acquired a 50 ton locomotive crane from the Newport News Ship Building and Dry Dock Company (NNSDC) for use in removing the old bridge and lifting the heavy steel stringers into place.  Both DRPT and the crane acquired from NNSDC have played a key role in making this project a reality.  With the exception of a contract engineer and local welders, the BB bridge upgrade program has been implemented and constructed using all BB forces, equipment, and administrative resources.  Bridge 36 was one of 18 bridges slated to be upgraded by the BB.
